Welcome to the project page for the Ontario Road Sanitary Trunk Sewer. This page explains what work is happening, where it’s taking place, and how it may affect you. You’ll also find updates, helpful information, and how to contact the project team.

Scope of work

This project includes building a new large sanitary sewer under Ontario Road. The pipe is about 1200 mm in diameter and will be installed using micro-tunneling, which is a trenchless method that reduces surface disruption.

The new sewer will run along Ontario Road from King Street to just east of Memorial Park Drive. It will connect to the existing system that leads to the Ontario Road Sewage Pumping Station. The sewer will be built about seven to eight metres below ground.

The project also includes installing a new 300 mm watermain and road reconstruction including new curb and sidewalks along Ontario Road from Southworth Street to Alberta Street.

Phase 1 is expected to be complete by summer 2026. This phase includes work along Ontario Road from west of Alberta Street to east of Memorial Park Drive.

Phase 2 will begin once most of Phase 1 is finished. This phase includes work along Ontario Road from King Street to west of Alberta Street. All construction is expected to be complete by spring 2027.

Traffic disruptions

Some roads and intersections will need to close to allow construction work to take place. Detour routes and signs will be in place to help guide drivers.

Road closure details:

  • Ontario Road east of Empress Street intersection – closed until summer 2026
  • Ontario Road west of Southworth Street intersection – closed until late summer 2026
  • Ontario Road will be closed to through traffic from west of Alberta Street to west of Wright Street from April 15 to June 12, 2026
  • Businesses at Rose City Plaza will remain open throughout construction. Access will change during the work:
    • From April 15 to April 24, access will be available from the Wright Street entrance only.
    • From April 25 to June 12, access will be available from both the Wright Street entrance and the Shoppers entrance. Temporary traffic signals will be in place near the rail tracks while crews complete watermain work. Deere Street will remain closed.
  • The temporary access off Coventry Road is for emergency vehicles and delivery trucks only
  • Follow posted detour signs and allow extra travel time
  • Dates may change due to weather or unexpected construction issues

Water shutdowns

Water will need to be turned off at times so crews can connect new services and tie the new watermain into the existing system.

We will give as much notice as possible before planned shutdowns. In emergency situations, we will try to notify you, but it may not always be possible.

If your water looks brown or discoloured, run your tap until it clears. If it is still discoloured after 20 minutes, call 905-735-1700 x3000.
