Pollution Prevention Control Plan Update and Wastewater Master Servicing Plan

The City of Welland is embarking on a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment Study to update its current Pollution Prevention Control Plan and Wastewater Master Servicing Plan.

The City of Welland's 2001 Pollution Control Plan and Wastewater Master Servicing Plan included several recommendations aimed at separating combined sewers, reducing extraneous flows, managing growth, and addressing capital requirements and remediation measures. The City now wants to update the pollution control plan and wastewater plan to identify the impacts of growth and improvements to the sewer system from the 2001 plans, and to evaluate alternatives proposed to reduce overflow for the long-term management of the wastewater system. City staff are conducting a public engagement campaign that includes open house sessions for the public and key stakeholders. Feedback provided through EngageWelland and from the open house sessions will assist in creating a sustainable and environmentally friendly wastewater system.

What's Underway?

The City of Welland has initiated a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment Study to update the City's Pollution Prevention Control Plan and Wastewater Master Servicing Plan. This update will serve as an opportunity to summarize previous recommendations implemented and support long-term growth, sustainability, and management of the wastewater system.

Why?

The City's Pollution Prevention Control Plan and Wastewater Master Servicing Plan was last updated in 2001 and included a number of recommendations aimed at separating combined sewers, reducing extraneous flows, managing growth, and addressing capital requirements and remediation measures. The 2019 Pollution Prevention Control Plan Update and Wastewater Master Servicing Plan will help identify the impacts of growth and improvements to the sewer system since 2001 and evaluate alternatives intended to reduce overflow for the long-term management of the wastewater system.

How?

This study is being undertaken as a Class Environmental Assessment in accordance with all requirements of the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (October 2000, as amended in 2007, 2011, and 2015), which is an approved process under the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act.

Final Report & Notice of Study Completion

The EA Project File Report will be posted by 9:00am on June 9th for Public Review under Project Documents on the right side of this page.

Following review, interested persons should provide written comments to the Project team within a 45-calendar day review period beginning on June 9, 2022 and ending on July 24, 2022.
