What is the inflow and infiltration investigation program?
The City of Welland is undertaking an Inflow and Infiltration (I&I) investigation throughout the city. I&I is stormwater that enters the sanitary sewage system directly through cross connections and roof drains or indirectly through old deficient infrastructure. The program will allow the city to identify the sources of I&I enabling us to target specific remediation efforts.
Why is inflow and infiltration a problem?
I&I causes many problems in the sanitary sewer system. It reduces pipe capacity which increases the chances of basement flooding, and sewage overflows into the environment. It also increases sanitary sewer treatment cost since stormwater is being processed through the treatment plant.
How is this program going to help solve the problem?
Through programs like these we can identify and start to eliminate sources of I&I. Removing stormwater from the sanitary sewer system reduces the chances of basement flooding, overflows into the environment, and lowers treatment costs. All things that affect the residents of the City of Welland.
Where are these programs taking place?
The City of Welland is actively investigating I&I in several priority locations throughout the city including:
Broadway;
Lincoln/ Coventry (North of Ontario Road);
Prince Charles Drive;
Dain/Gordon (South of Ontario Road) and;
Seaway Heights/ Feeder Road.

Study Area Resident Survey
Please complete the study area resident survey available in the tools section below. Completion of the survey helps the City gain a better understanding of each study area and what problems it faces.
