We’re inviting residents to share their feedback on future improvements to the former play area at Chippawa Park and Weller Avenue. The playground was removed earlier this year, and the space is now being reviewed for new uses.

We’re exploring ways to make this area active, flexible, and welcoming for people of all ages. While a new playground will not be built in this location, your input will help shape how the space can support activity, connection, and enjoyment.

We’re also looking at whether some features could be better located near other amenities in the park.

No final decisions have been made—your input will help guide what comes next.

Survey

Why was the playground removed?

The playground at Chippawa Park and Weller Avenue had reached the end of its lifespan and was removed due to safety concerns.

In 2022, a new, modern playground was built nearby at First Avenue and Laughlin Avenue within the same park. This space includes play features for both younger children (18 months to five years) and older children (five to 12 years), bringing play features together in one location.

From a city-wide planning perspective, Chippawa Park continues to meet the City’s approved service level standard of one playground within 800 metres, as set out in the Parks, Recreation & Culture Master Plan.

This creates an opportunity to explore new and different uses for the Weller Avenue space.

What does “active use” mean?

Instead of building a new playground, we’re exploring ways to make this space active, flexible, and welcoming for people of all ages.

This could include simple features that support informal play, movement, and social connection. Any changes will be modest and designed to make the best use of the space within available funding.

We’re also looking at whether some features could be better placed near existing amenities, like the main playground or splash pad, to improve how people use the park overall.

Options will focus on:

  • Durable, cost-effective features
  • Low-maintenance solutions
  • Flexible uses for a wide range of ages
  • Improvements that can be delivered within approved budgets

Your feedback will help us understand which options would bring the most value to the community.

What’s next?

After the engagement period:

  • We’ll review community feedback and feasibility within available funding
  • We’ll explore options for the space
  • We’ll share updates as the project moves forward

Thank you for taking the time to share your input and help shape the future of Chippawa Park.
